Avoid procrastinating! Although some students appear to thrive on last-minute cramming, it is generally agreed that this is not the greatest strategy for most of us when taking an exam.
Here are some pointers in how to prepare for testing week:
Organize your study area: Make sure you have enough space. Is there enough light? Does your chair feel cozy? Are your videogames visible? Try and get rid of all distractions, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as possible.
Use flow charts and diagrams: When studying, visual aids can be quite beneficial. Challenge yourself to list all the information you already know about a topic at the beginning of it. Highlight important facts and information you know is key.
Practice on previous tests or quizes: This one in particular was one strategy I used to follow when I was in school. I always kept my tests and quizes to study before the final exams.
Make questionnaires: Write questions you may expect answering in the test. Focus on questions that force your critical thinking, more than just memorizing definitions, dates or names.
Take regular breaks: Even though you might believe it’s preferable to study for as long as you can, this can actually work against you. You wouldn’t attempt to run nonstop when preparing for a marathon. Similarly, studies have shown that taking regular breaks is extremely helpful for long-term memory retention. Hydrate, walk a bit. Remember Vitamin D is important for a healthy brain, too.
Eat brain food: Choose healthy meals or snacks that can improve your memory and focus such as fish, almonds, seeds, yogurt, and blueberries, to keep your body and brain well-fueled. And of course, water is always your best choice when hydrating.
REMEMBER: Exam week will be held from Monday, March 13th to Friday, March 17th.
School Hours: 7:30am – 12:00pm. Consider that, since the last exam might finish around noon, buses might leave around 12:10pm.
